In 2010 four ladies began to play pickleball on a regular basis at Third and Fir Streets in Sequim. They invited friends, who invited more friends and the group grew to the point that more court space was needed. With the permission of the Sequim School District, Sequim Sunrise Rotary provided the labor to expand the courts, and the players paid for concrete and supplies from player donations. The number of players continued to grow.
In 2015 with about 45 players, a formal club was formed and dubbed the Sequim Picklers. With the assistance of Sequim Family Advocates (charitable status), Alan Millet (pro bono attorney), and Jeanne Martin (pro bono CPA), a non-profit status was acquired, allowing fundraising efforts to begin for construction of a public pickleball facility. Over a period of several years, substantial funds were raised; architectural drawings were donated by Sequim Pickler, Christiane Ganss-Johnson; and an agreement was reached with the City of Sequim to build and oversee court construction.
In August of 2017, preliminary court construction began in Carrie Blake Park under City supervision. The courts were completed and opened for play on June 28, 2018. Click here for the pictorial history.
The Sequim Picklers has nearly 300 members and counting, from Clallam county and surrounding areas. We play at the outdoor courts at Carrie Blake Park and at the Boys and Girls Club at 4th and Fir Streets. Our club has both open play and organized play (see our calendar for play type and schedule).
We have enjoyed court exchange programs with Port Ludlow, Anacortes, and Gig Harbor, and regularly give free lessons to local citizens interested in learning the game.
We have provided training sessions for the youth at the Boys and Girls Club in Sequim and traveled to LaPush to teach the school children and staff. Pickleball has become a regular activity in both locations.
